I think this is a GREAT discussion to begin with our CANSA members…thank you, Katy, for setting this up.

      Thoughts:

One: The CANSA name is about as awkward an acronym as i’ve ever heard of. Since I once worked on defense issues, that means i’ve seen a lot of them too. It seems to have been selected because it rhymes with cancer.

Two: The words of CANSA do a poor job of describing member organizations and their work/mission.

At the risk of being the bomb-thrower on the first post, why not re-name the organization now and make a new effort? The newly named entity could be the legal sucessor of CANSA, and it wouldn’t be a problem from a marketing perspective since there has never been any coordinated marketing that I’ve heard of.

      Discuss…

I agree with Charlie. I can never remember what the name CANSA stands for. I agree that a mission statement would be a good start.

Suggestion to get the discussion stated: Cancer support organizations committed to bring HELP and HOPE to cancer patients and their families in our local communities.

I certainly agree with Charlie and Craig. I know when I was contacting some newer agencies about the conference last year, it was difficult explaing who we were to people. A logo would be great and an easier name to remeber even better.

I think Craig is off to a great start.

American Cancer Support Alliance (ACSA) p Ak-sa.

This name and acronym search well and there are no similarly named organizations.

I also searched American Community Cancer Support Alliance (ACCSA) with few results, so it would also do if there was an appetite for more of a local focus. I know it’s shamelessly similar to our agency name, but it is an option.

    Two thoughts:
I think it would be helpful in searching the internet if the first word in the name was “Cancer”, and American Cancer as the first two words immediately brings to mind American Cancer Society — which we definitely are NOT. I do like getting “community” in there, too. What about Cancer Community Support Organizations of America?

I do like the use of “Community” as we discuss changing the CANSA name – Community Cancer Support Alliance doesn’t hint at ACS except this odd realignment of the letters – CCSA.

We are a local, independent agency that exists to improve the quality of life of Hancock County’s cancer patients.

I do not like anything that starts with American Cancer…sorry, really bad taste for that. How about Local Community Cancer Advocacy Alliance. I will play with it some more. I do believe we should start from scratch I with you on that Charlie.

    Happy Holidays Everyone!
