Hello group,
Since our last postings, we now have 2 suggestions for a new CANSA name and a few suggestions about a possible Mission Statement for the group.
The suggestions so far are:
1. LCSA: Local Cancer Support Alliance
2. ACSA: American Cancer Support Alliance
Mission statement:
1. Cancer support organizations committed to bringing help and hope to cancer patients and their families in our local communities.
PLEASE PLEASE participate in this discussion and give us your thoughts and/or additional ideas for an acronym and a mission statement.
This is “our group”–and it would be great if everyone were actively involved in this process. Thanks!
ALSO: Rebecca with Cancer Action is looking for your feedback! They are re-vamping their wellness program and want to know if anyone has suggestions on evaluation tools (pre-test/post-test) to show the impact that the program will have on clients. Any one else have a wellness program that is being eveluated?? Thoughts???
Thanks everyone! This blog is a great tool for us–keep the ideas coming!
Hi,
I do not have a suggestion for a name as I just realized that we are considering changing it. I will attempt some creativity soon.
I have a strong resistance to name American Cancer Support Alliance. Our legal name is the Cancer Society of St. Joseph County DBA RiverBend Cancer Services. We began doing business in 2002 as RiverBend after 50+ years of confusion with the American Cancer Society. The confusion resulted in loss of revenue, name recognition etc.
What about United States Cancer Support Alliance? USCSA?

Kate and Kathryn,
I had the same reservation about using American Cancer in the name anywere. It may cause lots of confusion with ACS.
Now…being an LSU fan, we don’t like USC too much either. LOL! Just kidding! I think United States Cancer Support Alliance is a good option.
And Kathryn, I do think having Community in there is a great thought too. Good ideas!! Once we get several options listed, I think we can send out an email survey to “vote” and see what we come up with.

I received an email from Cancer Association of Anderson about their wellness programs. Here is their information:
“Regarding the wellness program, we have had two. One is an ongoing Oncology Rehab program run by our hospital. It is uniformly praised by the patients so we really don’t do evaluations any more. We conducted a Survivor School under a Komen grant last year that took breast cancer survivors through 10 weeks of classes. I have attached the pre and post evaluations we used for that. Hope these help.”-Kathryn Smith
I have these documents in my email, so if anyone would like to see their pre and post-tests, let me know and I will happy to email. Thanks Kathryn! Appreciate the feedback. Great thoughts!

This was Kathryn’s reply about the name change–
“Two thoughts:
I think it would be helpful in searching the internet if the first word in the name was “Cancer”, and American Cancer as the first two words immediately brings to mind American Cancer Society — which we definitely are NOT. I do like getting “community” in there, too. What about Cancer Community Support Organizations of America?
RE: Wellness programs. I am curious as to what people consider as “wellness” programs. We kind of lump all of our social support/lifestyle/education and outreach together under wellness. So we do evaluations differently depending on what it is. I have a generic program evaluation that I use, if anyone is interested in that.
For education and outreach, it depends on what type of event as far as how it is evaluated.
If anyone wants more info on our evals, let me know!

We are considering following the FitSteps4Life wellness program (fitstepsforlife.org) in collaboration with the major hospital across the street. I have met with them several times and their program is excellent plus all the “kinks” have been worked out.
Secondly, I would not use American and Cancer together in our new name as we all have enough problems trying to separate ourselves from ACS as it is!
Because my message has been consistently – We do the LOCAL support work, I would lean toward that message in our name. We are constantly breaking away from ACS’s inroads so I wouldn’t want to reaffirm ANYTHING ACS.
My thoughts today.
I would strongly urge that we not use the word “American” anywhere in our came and that we do use “local” or “community” somewhere in our name.
We do a pre/post survey instrument that is the same to find out how we have made a difference in the “quality of life” of a cancer patient. Very powerfull reporting tool for donors. If you want the details, call jane Oderberg at 817-921-0653.
